Cesky Krumlov is located in the lower mountain area of SW Czech Republic and the Vltava River, the same river that runs through Prague begins in this area. The regions to the SW against the German and Austrian borders were infamous for Czech citizens trying to escape to the west and being killed by their oppressors during communism. 


Pension Anna is Pink
It’s ironic because now people from all over flock here for its tranquil beauty. Described as CZ’s answer to Rothenburg de Tauber in Germany we got here around 1:00 pm in the afternoon. There were a lot of walking tourists on the streets at that time and “Pension Alley” spread to the left and right of us as we entered the Old town. That pesky Walking Zone sign that we had been scolded about in Olomouc poked it’s head up in the direction we were supposed to go for 1 B&B and I looked left and there was our 2nd choice Pension Anna. We checked there and they had a room, nice, super clean and big; comparable to the Schneiderterm in Sighisoara and very reasonably priced.

After checking in and changing we headed out to see the sights as well as catch lunch.
Bohemian Feast
We walked down to the main bridge and saw 2 restaurants that had a lot of people at them. After checking one we went to the Krcma U Dwau Maryi  which serves among other things  “A Bohemian Feast”, consisting of chicken or Rabbit or Pheasant and smoked ham, red cabbage and vegetables, a potato dumpling, a bread dumpling and some other stuff. 

It was fabulous and an excellent way to try all of CZ’s special dishes. It is located on the water just before the main walking bridge in Old Towne. The town is definitely like Rothenburg as in lots of eye candy. 

But here the focus is on the river and the castle.  

We really enjoyed watching the rafts in the afternoon as they came down a river channel and shot some small rapids. A few overturned but most were fine.

Later in the evening we’d return to the same streets to see the sunset and take some early evening photos. This is such a picturesque place. We’d recommend Cesky Krumlov to anyone looking for a quaint town experience.


Our favorite picture is that of " the Girls. " Each day the shop owner changes the display.

 Hope for the Best, plan for the worst! Ready to Ship This year we re-committed ourselves to travelling back through parts of Europe on our bike. Westjet's BikeAir program was not well founded at the beginning but in June seemed to have found it's feet. We found reasonably priced premium Economy seats, chose Rome as the destination as Barcelona/Spain doesn't honour the EU temporary permit for moto's for leisure purposes. Switzerland - Sept. 21-23 - Lukmanier Pass and Disentis

   Lukmanier Pass and Disentis Our last morning in Menaggio and we wake up to threatening skies. We knew they were forecast but we hoped we'd luck out like the rest of our trip and have great weather. It was not to be. After our final breakfast at the Hotel Merloni we load the bike and head towards Lugano, Switzerland.  This is a memorable highway for us that dates back to mid May 2006 when we rode from Colmar, France to Menaggio on a day that got colder and colder and began to snow on the Gotthard Pass. So much so, that we were turned back and had to take the Oberpal pass to Disentis and the Lukmanier Pass to Lugano.  I always characterized that ride which turned to pouring rain once you got over the Alps, "as driving inside a firehose" . We've been in contact with Heiko as he wanted to ride the pass and meet us 1/2 way and take us to his friends place in Disentis, CH. Ostia Antica and Ostia Lido

 Ostia Antica and Ostia Lido After a nice hot humid afternoon getting repacked after recovering our riding gear from panniers etc. we enjoyed a nice pizza at our B&B suite hotel. They run an extremely successful B&B, pizzeria near Ostia Antica, which was the birthplace of Rome before Rome. We had been here passing through in 2006 and stayed in 2014 while visiting the ruins of Ostia Antica itself. Our neighbor Jeff who has a degree in Archeology remarked about how impressed he was with OA and it is impressive. Our 2014 Ostia experience is here .  This morning, Sunday, we reset and were just going to go for a walk when I suggested we head close to the Lido and then take our walk there. It was a good plan.
